The beautiful city of Hakodate in the south of Hokkaido brings together history, delicious gourmet experiences and spectacular urban and natural views, including one of the world's most stunning nightscapes. With JAL's two-day travel plan, a trip to Hakodate becomes a trip to remember.
Hakodate Morning Market Tour & Lunch(About 2 hour required)
The Hakodate Morning Market is a historic institution that has continued since 1956. It features some 600 stalls selling seafood, produce, dried goods, and food and drink. In addition to shopping, there is also a food court and a restaurant arcade called Donburi Yokocho where you can eat fresh seafood for lunch.
Make your first stop at Hakodate Morning Market and enjoy the fresh local seafood.

Western District Walk(About 4 hours 25 minutes required)
A pleasant walk around the Western District, which is filled with examples of Western architecture like the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse and a cluster of churches. The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse features a range of facilities, such as a shopping mall, glasswork studio, and cafes and restaurants serving Hakodate delicacies. It's the perfect place to stay warm on a cold Hakodate winter's day. The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, where Emperor Taisho (Crown Prince at the time) once stayed during a visit, offers a fascinating glimpse of opulent Western architecture accentuated with Japanese design. Why not take a break at a cafe during your walk? There are many cafes housed in old preserved buildings in the Western District, including a Japanese-style cafe called Sabou Kikuizumi where you can enjoy coffee and desserts while sitting on tatami.

Asari Honten(About 1 hour required)
A long standing restaurant specializing in sukiyaki that is run by a butcher's shop. It has served high-grade meat for more than a century since it was founded in 1901, and is a favorite with locals. Sukiyaki made with meat fresh from the butchery and eaten in an elegant tatami-matted setting tastes exceptional. There are also specialty croquettes that sell out every day around lunchtime, so you may be tempted back for a second visit.

Mount Hakodate Nightscape(About 1 hour required)
The stunning vista from Mount Hakodate is a must-see, and was rated three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. In winter the reflections of streetlights and illuminations in the snow create even more brilliance, transforming the view into a mystical nightscape.
Night view of Hakodate is well-known as its icon. The city and mountains look spectacular in the night.
Gondola with 125 seats was renewed in Nov 2014, which immerses visitors to the beautiful views along the way.

Yunokawa Hot SpringOvernight stay required
One of Hokkaido's foremost hot springs, with a daily yield of over 7,000 tons. Many of the lodging facilities there are situated along the coast, and watching the sun rise while soaking in a hot spring is a particularly special experience. Some accommodations feature rare hot springs with a reddish brown color known as "Akayu."

Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden(About 1.5 hour required)
This facility uses hot spring heat from the Yunokawa Hot Spring. The gardens are lush with around 300 varieties of tropical plant, and during the winter period between December and May you can see adorable monkeys soaking in the hot springs. The hot springs also feature a footbath, so why not include it as part of your morning walk?
The glass-in greenhouse keeps warm even in the winter, enabling you to enjoy many varieties of tropical plants throughout the year.

Hakodate Noodle Kitchen Ajisai(About 1 hour required)
A venerable ramen restaurant with a history of over 80 years, established in 1930. Ajisai's famous "Ajisai Shio Ramen" is based on chicken and pork bone stock with strong accents of kelp harvested from Southern Hokkaido, creating a light yet full-flavored soup. They have an extensive menu, including the recently popular Ajisai Kari (curry ramen), so help yourself to a variety of ramen styles.

Goryokaku Fort District Walk(About 2.5 hour required)
Goryokaku Park is designated as a national special historic site, and features a restoration of the Hakodate Magistrate's Office that was established there in the Edo period. Master carpenters spent four years restoring the Magistrates Office, which is built without using any nails at all. Inside you can get a sense of the Edo period atmosphere, including a 72 tatami mat great hall, and intricate craftsmanship. From atop the adjacent Goryokaku Tower the beautiful star-shaped Goryokaku stretches out before you, and you can see out across all of Hakodate. You can also enjoy duty-free shopping at Marui Imai Hakodate in front of the Goryokaku-Koen-Mae tram stop, making it the perfect place to wrap up a trip.

Goryokaku is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in springtime, while the lighting along the moat creates beautiful scene in the winter season.

Lucky Pierrot Goryokaku Koen Mae Restaurant(About 1 hour required)
A local hamburger restaurant that originated in Hakodate. The most popular menu item is the "Chinese Chicken Burger." Salted and sweetened fried chicken is topped with crunchy lettuce and served in a bun packed with sesame seeds, making for a filling meal. In addition to hamburgers, the varied menu also features piping hot spaghetti with Chinese Chicken and meat sauce fried on a hot plate, as well as desserts such as soft-serve ice cream.
