Rabbit Island
2020.6.1
For around six weeks every year, Sounkyo Onsen, nestled between a range of roughly 2,000-meter-high mountains, hosts Hokkaido's most popular event. The festival is held on the banks of a river and the event is held in a huge area of around 10,000 m2 (107,639.1 sq. ft.), complete with an observation deck, a shrine, and around 30 different ice sculptures of various sizes. There are tunnels to explore within many of the larger ice sculptures, and ample opportunity to take one-of-a-kind photos. The sculptures even light up after dark, creating a fantastical, dreamlike atmosphere. Whether you visit before or after dark, there's plenty to enjoy — you can slide down the ice slide on a rubber ring, watch fireworks in the evening, or even try your hand at ice climbing on weekends and holidays.
